Tigecycline (Tygacil®): part of the solution to antimicrobial resistance

  • Tigecycline is indicated in adults and in children from the age of 8 years for the treatment of the following infections:1

    • complicated skin and soft tissue infections, excluding diabetic foot infections
    • complicated intra-abdominal infections
  • Tigecycline should be used only in situations where other alternative antibiotics are not suitable. Consideration should be given to official guidance on the appropriate use of antibacterial agents1
  • No significant drug interactions1,2

    • In vitro, tigecycline is neither a competitive inhibitor nor an irreversible inhibitor of CYP450 enzymes1
  • There is no target-based cross-resistance between tigecycline and most classes of antibiotics1
  • Tigecycline is eliminated unchanged primarily by the biliary/ faecal route1
