Wellbeing

The Cancer Insights Panel* highlighted patient wellbeing as a potential area of improvement during, and after, an experience of cancer. Commenting on their own experiences and the experiences of people they know that have been affected by cancer, the key themes relating to wellbeing were:1

Nutritional and physical wellbeing
Complementary wellbeing

Below are the panel members’ insights regarding wellbeing during an experience of cancer and their asks moving forward.

Hear from Helen who believes that, with the right support, people living with cancer can live some of their best days

Nutritional and physical wellbeing

What the panel members said…1

What patients are asking for…1

  • “[Would like] access to trustworthy integrative medicine support – i.e. vitamins and diet. Everything I read is contradictory and you don’t know if you are doing the right thing or not.” – patient, metastatic breast cancer
  • “Many people feel the medical system didn’t provide any support for patients going through treatment recovery. Little to no advice is given on key areas: diet, exercise, retraining the bowel, reducing treatment side effects, preventing late effects.” – patient, colorectal cancer
  • “I found the exercise classes wonderful from both a physical and social point of view. They weren’t really advertised enough.” – patient, colorectal cancer
  • “A whole treatment plan should include: mental health support, nutrition and diet, exercise, wellbeing. The body and mind needs to be treated, not just the cancer.” – patient, metastatic breast cancer
Dietary and nutritional advice to be embedded in the treatment and recovery plan
  • Many panel members reported gaps in non-clinical cancer care in terms of nutritional and dietary advice, with many patients expressing eagerness to learn more about how their diet and nutritional intake can support them through their experience with cancer.
Exercise and physical wellbeing to be embedded in the treatment and recovery plan
  • Some of the panel members shared desire from patients to learn more about exercise and physical recovery support after a diagnosis of cancer. The panel members highlighted a need for more information surrounding exercises and physical activities that may support and aid their recovery and ability to perform day-to-day tasks.
  • The panel members also recognised the importance of cancer-specific information, as some people have adjusted physical abilities after a particular type of cancer or treatment.

Complementary wellbeing

What the panel members said…1

What patients are asking for…1

  • “[HCPs should] consider holistic services – acupuncture, complementary therapy, yoga, pilates.’ – anonymous
  • “Different trusts offer therapies such as reflexology and acupuncture – but these are limited to 6-10 sessions.” – anonymous
  • “Consider holistic services – acupuncture, complementary therapy, yoga, pilates.” – anonymous
Complementary therapies to be discussed as appropriate
  • For some patients, complementary therapies are an important pillar of cancer management. Although these are not a replacement for traditional medicine, the panel members noted a need for alternative therapies to be better signposted and offered to patients where appropriate – for example, as a means of dealing with certain symptoms or to boost their physical or emotional health.
  • With this information provided by HCPs, the hope is that patients are more likely to come across reputable information on complementary therapies (and avoid information on unfounded information, such as alternative therapies).

Cancer Insights Panel

*The Cancer Insights Panel is a Pfizer initiative developed to gather the perspectives of people impacted by cancer. The first panel, which ran between June 2022 and January 2024, was formed of 30 people who were carefully selected based on their ability to share the needs and voices of a range of people affected by cancer, including patients and carers alike. This resource has been developed based on insights shared by panel members. Pfizer has reviewed and compiled these insights, to identify potential areas for improvement during an experience of cancer. All panel members have consented to the sharing of their contributions. Direct quotes from panel members are presented in quotation marks.
