Inactivated Vaccines are developed using a live pathogen that is inactivated or killed so that it can no longer replicate itself.1 This means that when the inactivated vaccine is given, the pathogen is strong enough to generate an immune response, but without causing disease.1
This makes this form of vaccine much more suitable than live vaccines for those people suffering with immunocompromised conditions.1
Because inactivated vaccines do not contain live pathogens, they may not be as effective at stimulating a strong or long-lasting immune response. This means that multiple doses of the vaccine may be necessary to build up sufficient immunity, and periodic booster vaccines may be needed to maintain immunity over time.2,3
