VTE is a large clinical burden in the UK and Europe

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a condition in which a blood clot forms, most often in the deep veins of the leg, groin or arm (known as deep vein thrombosis, DVT). These clots may break free and travel in the blood, lodging in the lungs (known as pulmonary embolism, PE). Together, DVT and PE are known as venous thromboembolism (VTE) – a dangerous, and potentially fatal medical condition. Venous thromboembolism is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide.1
United Kingdom
  • Up to 1 in every 1,000 people are affected by a VTE each year2
  • Up to 55% of VTE cases occur during or after hospitalisation, making it a leading preventable cause of hospital death3
  • The average cost of VTE treatment and management was estimated at £1,011,437 per NHS Trust in 2017/18*4

Implementation of appropriate VTE prophylaxis is a high priority
*Annual VTE-related costs are from the All-party Parliamentary Thrombosis Group freedom of information survey for 2016/17, which focused specifically on the cost of VTE treatment and management at CCG and Trust level and was responded to by 46% of CCGs.
