Burden of Alopecia Areata
Alopecia areata (AA) has been associated with poor health-related quality of life.1,2 Hair loss can be emotionally devastating and lead to depression, anxiety and low self-esteem.3
Coping with AA can be a daily challenge that may cause psychosocial insecurities.3,4 Patients may feel anxious and self-conscious in social situations and socially withdraw.3,5,6
In adolescents, AA may affect school attendance3,6 and performing poorly.3
AA may also affect adults in their professional lives and in terms of finding employment.3
Stigmatising attitudes of laypersons toward patients with alopecia exist across a multitude of social and professional scenarios.7 The prevalence and magnitude of this stigma varies by alopecia severity.7 Stereotypes perceived include sickliness and unattractiveness and this may result in a feeling of being uncomfortable with physical contact with patients with alopecia.7
